Development
[edit]After the release and development of Sonic Robo Blast 1, Sonic Team Junior began work on a sequel "Sonic Robo Blast 2", Starting off as a 2D Game in the same styling as SRB1, Until October 31 1999, when they decided to move to the Doom Legacy engine to allow this game to be created in a 3D Styling, Much similar to the idea of "Sonic 3D Blast" but with a style of the original Genesis games.[1] In November of 2000, the first Demo of the game released, featuring the beginning of the Single Player Campaign with only 1 unfinished level. The demos would be updated continuously until June 19th of 2003, when Version 1.1 of SRB2 was Released, featuring the same levels from the demos along with 2 additional levels. This would be patched and updated minorly until July 24th, 2009, when Version 2.0 was released, adding more content to the game giving it a total of 16 levels, and updating the Multiplayer Mechanic dramatically. The next update would not occur until March 15th 2014 which performed a programming language change to Lua.[2] This game is still being developed as of 2022.
Legacy
[edit]After the success of SRB2, Unofficial Mods of It were made, The most well-known being SRB2 Kart, a Kart Racer that uses SRB2 Levels, and characters, and even allows for Custom Characters via the built-in add-on system. The speedrunning scene of SRB2 was a major part of donations for the NoKidsHungry Fundraising Event. SRB2 Has been featured in various gaming magazines, mostly with positive intent.
Gameplay
[edit]SRB2 is a 3D Platformer in the style of classic Sonic games that were released for the Sega Genesis, And Sega Saturn. You get the choice of playing as 6 characters, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Fang, Metal Sonic, And Amy. (the last three being unlocked by progressing through the main campaign) Sonic is able to perform a Thok, which is similar to the homing attack, but it doesn't lock on to enemies. Tails has the ability to fly, and, (if your playing as sonic and tails) Carry Sonic around. Knuckles has the ability to glide, and access new routes exclusive to Knuckles. Fang uses a popgun to attack enemies and can use his tail to bounce. Metal Sonic is identical to his normal counterpart, but instead of the Thok, you can hover using his jet boosters. Amy's moveset mostly consists of her using her hammer, which she uses to attack enemies. The game consists of 10 zones, two of which aren't available in the games current state. Each of these zones contain secrets, such as Emerald Tokens, Emblems, etc. The special stages are inspired by The game NiGHTS Into Dreams, In which you fly through the special stage, collecting blue spheres to open the capsule at the end containing the emerald. There are 3 acts in each zone, the third being a boss battle between Sonic and Eggman.
Plot
[edit]The game takes place 3 months after the events of Sonic Robo Blast. After Doctor Eggman was Defeated, He hides in the Egg Rock for 3 months, and decides to begin increasing his Robot Production line, to allow for an even stronger defense against Sonic and his friends Miles "Tails" Prower and Knuckles. Eggman decides to target the fictional 'Greenflower Mountain" with his battleship, used as a diversion against the true attack, where sonic happened to be located at that time. In an instant, the mountain was de-faced and replaced with eggmans face.[3]
