Lev Poliakov (November 29 1934 Saint Petersburg Russia) is a photojournalist known for his refusal to compromise professional standards.

Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Poliakov graduated from Lesgapht Universaty in 1961. He studied Photography and Cinematography under E.Razovsky [1] and A.Moskvin [2] Lev got inrolled in The Marin School of Navigation and graduated in 1962 with Diving and Sailing Certificate. Lev is known for his incessant perfectionism and thorny personality. Poliakov was a highly successful photojournalist in the Soviet Union. Like many Russian artists, his work has become widely recognized only after they left their homeland. Currently he lives in New York City and is a Professor of Photography at the New York Institute of Technology. He lectured on the subject of photography at Columbia, George Washington, Vanderbilt, Amherst and NYU universities.

In the 70's he worked with Jacques Cousteau and was part of the Middletown project with Peter Davis at PBS(Channel 13).

Lev Poliakov's photographs are part of private collections through out the world and have been auctioned at Sotheby's.
