Group contacts

IRC Group Contacts are the liaisons between the Wikimedia community and the staff of the freenode IRC network, they are elected by the Wikimedia community, and by default have unlimited powers in all Wikimedia channels. However their job is similar as a job of stewards. They are supposed to assist in channels where it's required, especially small channels with no operators. Contacts who act inappropriately can be recalled by the community, preferably based on discussion on wiki.

Any member of community can apply for the group contact permissions.

Channel contacts

Can be easily compared to bureaucrats. They have the ability to promote and remove operator status of users, and change channel settings. All their actions should be covered by consensus established by community.

Channel operators

Irc operators are people with ability to remove users from a channel and enforce certain restrictions on users. Both contacts and operators should be chosen by community, however irc operators can be selected by contacts, in case community is not against it.

Dealing with abusive users

There should be a difference when dealing with established wikipedians with the wikimedia cloak and unknown users, who are being abusive. All users who are being abusive, unless it's emergency requirement (flooding with spam) should be warned in a first place, before being kicked from a channel. Operators should assume a good faith, some users may act as spammers, just because they don't know how irc works. The users who continue the inappropriate activity should be removed from a channel for limited time (1 or 2 days). If they are repeatedly trolling, they can be removed for extended period, or even indefinitely. People who are blocked from editing wikipedia, can be removed from channel as well.

Appealing the block

If you are removed from a channel, you should receive appropriate reason for that. In case you didn't, you are encouraged to ask the operator who removed you from a channel. In case they are not about to remove the ban, and you wish to discuss it further, you can start a request on comment regarding this block on wikipedia. In this specific case parts of channel logs may be allowed to be posted in order to prove that you didn't break any rules. If community decide that block is supposed to be removed, it will be immediately removed by any active operator.
