From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The cyber- prefix and cyber as an adjective are used to denote things that are related to the internet.[1]

Definition[edit]

T.C Sottek from The Verge wrote that they updated The Devil's Dictionary from Ambrose Bierce, where the cyber- prefix was defined in the following way:

cyber- (prefix):

(1) A linguistic cue informing the reader that the meaning of the word to follow should only be construed in the context of vaguely imminent threats and the need for more federal funding.

(2) Something “computery.”[2]

History[edit]

The word cyberspace was coined by William Gibson.[3]

Usage and criticism[edit]

Richard Holdren, a lexicographer at the Oxford English Dictionary, stated the following:

"At that time you . . . seem to get a mix of positive and negative terms involving the prefix, which possibly reflects the mixed feelings people often have about the opportunities and threats a new technology can bring."[4]

Annalee Newitz from io9 stated that the first usage of cybersecurity started in 1989.[4]

[5]

The usage of the cyber- prefix is contested.
