Introduction
[edit]
- Chloe Albert is a Canadian musician, singer and songwriter. She was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, and was recently nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award for New Emerging Artist of the Year. (6) Chloe released her first album Dedicated State in March of 2008. (3) – a folk album that also contains hints of jazz and blues, which can be found in her songs Check Mate and Honey Bee (4). Folk music has the ability to tell a story and Chloe’s album Dedicated State has her fans hanging on every word.
History
[edit]
- Chloe Albert began her music career taking piano lessons at the age of five - she then started playing the violin through school and soon after joined a youth orchestra. After three years of playing the violin Chloe stopped the instrument altogether, but found another instrument she loved even more, the guitar. Chloe was led to the guitar through the influence of her mother, who played the folk guitar and always had one lying around the house. Chloe bought her first guitar at the age of 15 and mainly taught herself how to play. However, she did have a little help from her mother, who taught Chloe the first song she ever played on guitar – Follow Me (4).
- At the age of sixteen Chloe began performing at open-mic shows and small venue gigs where her love of performing was realized (2). Having the opportunity to express herself musically and perform with other musicians was enough for Chloe to find herself as a songwriter (2).
- Several years later, after countless open-mic shows and small venue gigs, Chloe decided to pursue her growing interest in music. In the Fall of 2002, she entered the Grant MacEwan Music program. Here, Chloe performed for hundreds as a vocalist in the Showcase Band, took vocal lessons from Rhonda Withnell, enrolled in a song writing course and investigated many other courses which helped round out her musical skills and craft. In 2004 Chloe completed her music diploma from Grant MacEwan College (4).
- It was two years later that Chloe received her big break. In 2006 Chloe was twice selected among hundreds of applicants by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) and the Edmonton Arts Council to receive funding to support the recording of her debut solo album (2). Thanks to the AFA and Edmonton Arts Council Chloe was able to create her first album Dedicated State (8).Chloe co-produced the self-written album with Louis Sedmak Productions in Edmonton (2).
Performances
[edit]
- Since the album’s release in March of 2008 Chloe continues to perform live in many facets. She plays for many community and charity events, such as The Abbotsfield Youth Project and Homefest 2008. Chloe has also performed at Junofest, The Edmonton Folk Fest and numerous other locales. She will also be performing at the upcoming WCMA (Western Canadian Music Awards) festival.
- For a full list of Chloe’s shows visit her myspace page at: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=284039744 and refer to Upcoming Shows (4).
- Chloe has said that her largest performance to date was at the Centennial Concert Hall in Winnipeg Manitoba. She played in the lobby, to a crowd of several thousand people. The performance was a fundraiser for Dreams Take Flight, which is a non-profit association that flies mentally, physically, and socially disabled children to Disney World. Chloe played this fundraising performance with Theresa Sokyrka and Chantal Kreviazuk (4).
- Chloe’s favourite performance to date was at Quincey’s in Calgary, where she opened for Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland. As she explains, ‘There was something special and a little magical about that evening, it felt as though we were all in our own little underground world for the evening, it was a full house and Luke and Melissa were incredible together’ (4).
Members
[edit]
- Chloe is primarily a solo artist; however, she is also part of a ten piece show band which is lead by Dave Babcock (4). Babcock founded the group over ten years ago at the Kit Kat Club (4). The band is currently called the Top Ten Show in Review (4).
- Chloe’s album Dedicated State also featured the following studio musicians - in no particular order, Sandro Dominelli, Kent Sangster, John Taylor, Derek Stremel, Matthew Gerzymisch, Rob Hewes and Van Wilmott (4).
- Recently Chloe had the opportunity to play with Chantal Kreviazuk at the Dreams Take Flight show in Winnipeg (4).
Album
[edit]
- Chloe’s first album, Dedicated State was released in March of 2008. She was able to record her album because of a government grant she received. The songs on the album were written over an eight year span, some being the first songs Chloe had ever written. The album was entitled Dedicated State by Chloe herself, as it represented what the last five to ten years had been for her. There were a lot of roadblocks in her journey to complete, and record her album – it took a Dedicated State (4).
- Dedicated State was the number one album played on CKXU 88.3 Radio on their Folk/Roots/Blues charts in Lethbridge at the end of September, beginning of October, 2008 (9).
- CKUA radio at the University of Albert has also given Dedicated State a lot of play time (7).
