Gajendra Kumar Garhewal was born on 18 November 1996 (at 04:20 am) in a Hindi-speaking Garhewal family, in the princely state of Madhya Pradesh, part of the Central India Agency (now part of Madhya Pradesh). His father, Rameshwar Prasad Garhewal is a charge scribe in collector office Bilaspur .His mother Pramila Devi Garhewal who was from Bilaspur, Madhya Pradesh. The family's last name used to be Garodiya; changed it to Garhewal in order to identify his family with his native town,Gajendra was named "'Pintu'" at his birth. His parents later renamed his Gajendra.
