Chaos Frame
[edit]Chaos Frame is a progressive metal band from St Paul, Minneapolis formed in 2010 by Matt Hodsdon.
Chaos Frame is influenced musically by Disillusion, Symphony X, Kamelot, Steve Roach, Solar Fields, David Sylvian, Beyond Twilight, Devil Doll, Sade, X Japan, Anthem, video game composers, especially from the SNES and PS1 eras – Nobuo Uematsu, Yasunori Mitsuda, Yoko Shimomura; in terms of work ethic, by Frank Zappa and Devin Townsend. When Chaos Frame started in 2010 Matt Hodson had most of Another Life written and demoed, and was looking for someone to sing on it. Carlos Alvarez (a mix engineer, who later mixed the second album Paths To Exile) introduced him to his friend Dave Brown. Matt and Dave spent the next couple of years working on Another Life, and during this time Matt assembled a live lineup in Saint Paul which would only play three shows, but led to current guitarist Andy Xiong joining the band.
Another Life, the debut, was self released in 2011 and was well received at the time, but according to Matt Hodsdon the band themselves find it "awkward to listen to and prefer not to talk about it". [2]
Paths To Exile was released by Nightmare Records in 2015
On this album there are a lot of guest musicians including John Yelland of Disforia, the drummer Pat Ruthland (This is what Matt Hodsdon says about why: "We were doing kind of a dry run to see how recording drums would work. Steve Bergquist recorded Painful Lessons, along with a Crimson Glory cover that so far we haven’t released. When it came time to do the whole album, I was roommates with Pat Ruhland, and it was apparent that the faster songs could use his death metal drumming style. Steve is a fantastic drummer also, but rooted more in prog rock." [2]), Kevin Alter on Alto Saxophone, Rob Jalonen of Noble Beast on back vocals and choirs, Aron Lott of Pestifere on harsh vocals, Chiara Dezi of Harpia Deiis and Carlos Alvarez of Shadowdance on additional and backing vocals [3]
The band call their style Regressive metal. Quote: "We’re taking the bullshit wankery out of prog and putting riffs back in."[2]
