Ethel Groffier[edit]

Ethel Groffier was born in Brussels, Belgium, in 1935. She studied law at the Free University of Brussels and then worked for the International Organization of Employers in Geneva, Switzerland. She moved to Canada in 1967 and has lived there ever since, working a few months in Ottawa for the federal Labour Department and then moving to Montreal where she had a long teaching career at McGill University while writing numerous books about private international law, family law, human rights and other subjects. She retired from McGill U. in 1995 but remained very active, publishing several books on 18th century France and Voltaire. Her most recent book, published in February 2020, was a well-noted addition to current public debates on the subject of cultural appropriation (footnote here to La Presse article).[edit]
