I am a junior biology major at Boston College. As part of Professor Hake's Developmental Biology course, I will be collaborating with others in the class to edit the Wikipedia page for the 3' UTR.

Project Proposal for the 3’ UTR

  • The current Wikipedia page has a basic definition of the 3' UTR and describes some regulatory sequences within it, including a polyadenylation signal, sites that affect mRNA stability and localization, and sites targeted by microRNAs. The page has around 3 short paragraphs. This information will help us start, and we will expand upon it.
  • The talk page requested a clear, general definition at the beginning for someone who knows very little or nothing about 3’ UTRs.

The information our group will add to the page will include:

  • History: When was the 3' UTR discovered? What did previous scientists think of its function?
  • Physical: What are the general characteristics of the 3' UTR? How does the mechanism that circularizes mRNAs work? How long is the 3’ UTR and does this length differ based on the organism?
  • What are some of the most common 3' UTRs that have been previously studied?
  • How is the 3' UTR used to regulate translation? Does the mechanism of regulation differ based on the organism? Example: progenitors, 3’ UTRs inhibit the production of meiotic and oocyte proteins by post-transcriptional mechanisms involving two classes of RNA-binding proteins.
  • How are microRNAs and the poly (A) tail used to regulate translation? Example: human single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on both seed target region and the rest of 3′UTRs of miRNA target genes were under significantly stronger negative selection, when compared to non-miRNA target genes.
  • What are the biological techniques used to study the 3' UTR in the past?
  • What are the effects of mutations within the 3' UTR?
  • What are some of the future research goals involving the 3' UTR?

Our group will divide the work up as follows:

  • Bryce: biological techniques, future research, effects of mutations
  • Michael: history, physical characteristics, most common UTRs, general definition
  • Michelle: microRNA and poly (A) tail regulation of translation
