Dr Durgeswar Doley

Dr. Durgaeshwar Doley was the founding head professor of sociology department at Dibrugarh University. Dr.Durgaeshwar Doley, known as the first sociologist in North East India, was born on November 30, 1935 at Kumarbari village in Zengarimukh area of Majuli, the world's largest river island. He graduated from Jagannath Barua College (JB College) in Jorhat in 1957 and masters from Guwahati University in 1961. He received scholarship from the Assam government and graduated again in Sociology from “School of Sociology” Leeds University , United Kingdom(UK). He received his PhD in Criminology subject in 1979. However, before completing his PhD degree, he joined Dibrugarh University as the first professor of sociology in 1967.

Dr. Durgeswar Doley is also known as the Father of Sociology in Assam/North East India. He did not make any errors in teaching, retired from his job in 1995. Dr.Durgeswar Doley was involved in various social activities besides being a sociologist, teacher, researcher, writer etc. He worked unopposed to take the society forward in various directions irrespective of caste and creed. His deep thinking has created writings that are valuable assets for Assamese society and the literary world. He was a brilliant star in the vast field of sociology in the North East and is a dedicated professor of sociology at Dibrugarh University. He was also the first sociologist and pioneer of research in North East India. He has written many valuable articles in Assamese and English.
