Scott Brodie is an Australian author who has published more than 135 non-fiction books, most of them Australian history from before European settlement until recent times. His writing career spans more than 30 years.

Background

[edit]

Most of Scott Brodie's childhood was spent in Brisbane, Australia, his birthplace. The only exception was a life-changing two years in Penang, Malaya (as it then was), where his father was stationed with the Australian Army. This triggered a lifelong love of travel and an interest in different cultures and societies. Brodie's wish to be a writer developed early, encouraged by his love of reading and books. After leaving high school he went through a variety of jobs, beginning as a message boy with an advertising agency and ranging through various industries including softgoods, electrical appliances, jewellery retailing and the airline business. From there he made his way into sales with a pen manufacturer, followed by a long stint in the greeting cards business.

Following a move to Sydney in 1978 Brodie entered management with a major book distributor. This gave him extensive experience in most aspects of the publishing business including distribution, sales, marketing, promotion, rights and editorial. It also opened the way to his writing career, which began in 1983 with a number of books on Australian politics, social history and transportation. In the 1990s Brodie joined a global mass-market fiction publisher and travelled extensively in Asia managing export and foreign language publishing as well as researching publishing in Asian languages. He was also the company's media spokesperson, making many appearances on radio and television.

Writing

[edit]

Scott Brodie's first book was published by Dreamweaver Books in 1983, under the pseudonym Samuel Brimson (his maternal grandfather's name). His writing encompasses most aspects of early Australian history including exploration, the First Fleet, the Rum Rebellion, wool boom, gold rushes, politics, the Constitution and the federation movement. He has also written on the major events and social history of the 20th century including politics, important people who influenced the nation's history, immigration, war and the military, social history, cinemas, aviation, railways, shipping, motor vehicles and day-to-day life. In 2004 he wrote an eight-volume series on the nations of the world for a US publisher.

After a five-year break from writing, in January 2011 the first of his new books for Trocadero Publishing was published. This is a series of educational/reference titles covering a wide spectrum of Australian history and society. In 2014 he also began writing a new series linked to the National Curriculum, published by Australian Geographic History. Today his books are found in print and ebook formats in most school and public libraries across Australia and are used widely by students in years 4 to 10.
