Architecture
[edit]The architectural expression and the decorative finish clearly reflect Dutch Renaissance preferences as evidenced by the ornamental portals and windows and especially in sweeping Italianate gables.
The castle is located on three small islands. The three-winged main building consists of Kongefløjen (The King's Wing) to the north flanked by Prinsessefløjen to the east and Kirkefløjen (Chapel Wing) to the west. The courtyard, known as Indre Slotsgård (Inner Castle Yard), is closed to the south by a low gallery with the main gate. The north side of the King's Wing is flanked by two octagonal towers but has few ornaments. The south side is richly decorated with sandstone ornamentation. Two octagonal staircase towers, lower than the ones on the north side, flank the main entrance.
The Outer Castle Yard (Ydre Slotsgård) is located on the central isle which is flanked by the Amtmandsboligen to the east and Kancellifløj to the west. The Hercules Fountain stands in the middle of the year. The outer yeard can be accessed either from the south through the large Gate Tower (1618-23) or from the west through the Chancellery Wing.
