Dr Sukha Baruah Dr. Sukha Baruah, M.A., Ph. D. was born in Betbari Borkuri Chetia Gaon, Sivasagar, Assam in the year 1946. After her marriage to Shri Binanda Chandra Baruah, she moved to Moran and started residing with her family at Pratap Gogoi Path, Ushapur, Moranhat, Dist. Charaideo, Assam. She breathed her last on 3rd September, 2023 at her residence at an age of 76 years.
After completing her education, she felt that society can advance only if girls are educated and empowered. She singlehandedly established schools, college, vocational centers exclusively for women education and empowerment. At a tender age of 22 years, she established the ‘Betbari Model M.E. Girls School’ in 1968 and served as the Founder Head Mistress till 1970. After her marriage, she moved to Moran and joined as Assistant Teacher, Moran Girls School in 1973 in a permanent job and continued till 1992.
She continued with her panache for education and even after being a mother of three children she continued with her studies and successfully completed MA and PhD. She felt that she needs to contribute to the society and made a difficult but bold decision to quit her permanent job and single handedly established the ‘Moran Mahila Mahavidyalaya’, an institution for women education in Moran in 1992. She contributed 21 years of her life for the upliftment of women education by serving as the Principal of this college. To hone the literacy skills of the women and empower them, she established the Moran Branch of Sadou Asom Lekhika Samaroh Samiti and served as its Founder President. She was instrumental in setting up of around 16 branches of Sadou Asom Lekhika Samaroh Samiti in Charaideo, Sivasagar and Dibrugarh districts. She was elected to the Central Committee of Sadou Asom Lekhika Samaroh Samiti and served as Working President from 2008 to 2014. She was elected as the President of Sadou Asom Lekhika Samaroh Samiti and served from 2014 to 2016. To empower women and make them self-dependent, she established "Sanghamitra" (Moran Anchalic Mahila Manch) in the year 1992 and served as the Founder Secretary. Under the aegis of “Sanghamitra”, she established a Women Vocational Training and Production Centre for Weaving, Knitting, Cutting, Tailoring and Production and served as the Founder Secretary from the year 1992. Later a school “Sanghamitra Jatiya Vidyalaya” for the underprivileged and needy was established in the year 2001 where she served as the Founder Secretary. She has served as President, Managing Committee of Moran College, Demow College and Moran Mahila Mahavidyalaya. She also served as Member of Managing Committee of Moran College, Nitai Pukhuri College, Khowang Pithubor Girls’ College. To cater to the need of the women poets of the state, an exclusive platform “All Assam Mahila Kabi Manch” was established in 2016 and she served as the founder President till 2022. She has published a total of 18 books including her doctoral thesis “Ahomxakalor Utsav Anusthan”, the fifth edition has been published in 2018. 02 more books are in for publication in this year. She has also edited 06 books besides publishing numerous articles of historical and social importance, poems, short stories in leading newspapers and magazines. She has been conferred upon the tittles of “Ratnagarbha”, “Moran Konwari” “Karmajogi”, “Preronamoyi” “Mohiyokhi”, “Habruni Phame” & “Jashingfa”.
The major recognitions and awards conferred upon her are: • ‘Literary Award’ of Govt. of Assam in 2013. • ‘Literary Pension’ of Govt. of Assam in 2014. • ‘Chandraprobha Saikiani Award’ of Govt. of Assam in 2015. • ‘Women Education Excellence Award’ of All India Poetess Conference in 2016. • ‘Birangona Mulagavoru Award’ of Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, Assam (TAYPA) in 2017. • ‘Social Service & Literary Award’ of All Assam Lekhika Samaroh Sammittee in 2018. • ‘Jiwan Samridha Award’ of Mahashay Nyash, Dhemaji in 2019. • ‘Purnima Baruah Award’ by Singhapurukh Radha Gubinda Baruah Memorial Society, Dibrugarh, 2000 • Recipient of two titles ‘Ratnagarbha’ and ‘Moran Kunwari’, by Sodou Asom Lekhika Samaroh Sammittee recognizing her works on women education and literacy. • She was felicitation by 82 nos. of organizations in a meeting organized by Sodou Asom Lekhika Samaroh Sammittee, Moran Branch on 23rd June 2013.
