ARO 12 (Also known as Dacia Deceneu) was an automobile produced by ARO in collaboration with the Dacia assembly plant, resulting in 14 units. The model combined a Dacia 1310 “Break” (Wagon) body and an ARO chassis, along with all related mechanical elements.[1]
History
[edit]Nicolae Ceaușescu was impressed by the preliminary representation of this new model and approved the design for further testing. He was the first person to drive this new vehicle model, which was presented to him at Sala Palatului (Palace Hall) in Bucharest following his review of multiple copies at his residence in Bucharest and Snagov.
Its 4x4 drivetrain configuration and its significantly higher ride height compared to that of a Dacia “Break”, was appealing to former President Nicolae Ceausecu. However, the person who would ultimately not approve this model for production was his wife, Elena Ceaușescu.[2]
Not long after Elena Ceausescu's refusal, ARO received an order for 10 units to be produced in 10 days for ministers within the Ministry of Trade/Commerce at the time. Once again, the vehicles which were ultimately produced were eventually ordered off the road by Elena Ceausescu. The vehicles would ultimately be used by the ARO plant for deliveries, special functions and other internal activities.
