"Cry Little Sister" is a highly successful gothic rock song released on the Atlantic Records in 1987 by Gerard McMahon (under the pseudonym of Gerard McMann). Boasting record sales in excess of 7 million copies worldwide, the song is now deemed to be a 'gothic rock anthem'.

Although Cry Little Sister was released as a single, it was originally recorded as the theme song to Joel Schumacher's cult comedy-horror film The Lost Boys. As such the song is included on the film's soundtrack album.

Cry Little Sister was written by Gerard McMahon and Michael Mainieri.

Recording Artist

Prior to working on The Lost Boys project, Gerard McMahon (more recently known as G Tom Mac), decided to adopt the pseudonym 'Gerard McMann'. Of this he has said:

"When I would go out and do interviews on the radio or TV, it seems everybody was pronouncing my name in many different ways, except the correct way. So I thought it would make more sense to spell it out the way that is it pronounced."

This has however led to a great deal of confusion about the identity of the recording artist in the years since the song was released. In addition to which, "Cry Little Sister" has often been wrongly attributed to The Sisters Of Mercy, who it is not believed have ever covered this song.

Alternate versions

• 1989 saw one of the first artists cover Cry Little Sister, singer/songwriter and prodigy guitarist Charlie Sexton.[1]Featuring Bryan Adams on backing vocals, the song is included on Sexton's second album, the self titled Charlie Sexton.[2]
• A newly recorded version of Cry Little Sister was released by McMahon in 2000, on his band G TOM MAC's debut album G TOM MAC.[3]
• German black metal artists Mystic Circle also decided to cover the song as a bonus track on their 2002 album Damien. [4] [5] [6][7]
• In 2003 the song was covered by Brighton band The Lost Brothers. Their version, a dance remix featuring original vocals by G TOM MAC, was released as a single under the title "Cry Little Sister (I Need U Now)". [8]

[9]The remix was an instant hit. It was a #1 single in Germany and peaked at #21 in the UK charts. The single also reached the top 40 in several other countries. . [10] [11]

• In 2004 American gothic industrial metal band Carfax Abbey covered the track for their Second Skin album.
• In 2005 the song was covered by the German gothic rock group Blutengel and appears on their album The Oxidising Angel. Their version was also made in the style of the original.
• The original Lost Boys version was included on G TOM MAC's next album, 2007's Thou Shalt Not Fall.
• A mash-up of the song was also included on Thou Shalt Not Fall.
• A further version, the upbeat Cry Little Sister (Rebel Angel Remix), was released on G TOM MAC's How to be Pop, Stupid, Cool EP.
• The song has more recently been covered by American band Aiden for the soundtrack of the sequel to The Lost Boys - Lost Boys: The Tribe.
• Another very popular version of the song is a recent remix by DJ Lee which is soon to be officially released, with a new video featuring G TOM MAC. It is believed that this collaboration may have come about partly as a result of the large number of favourable reviews the remix received after being posted by DJ Lee on the You Tube website.

Interesting fact

According to G Tom Mac's My Space, a new PlayStation game is currently in production based on this song.
