Vernon Raphael Hassell (born 18 September 1955)[1] is an Saban businessman and former politician.

Political Career[edit]

Mr. Hassell entered politics in 1983 when he became the leader of the Windward Islands People's Movement (WIPM). In 1983 he was elected to the Island Council of Saba and he was also elected to serve as a Commissioner within the Executive Council. In 1986 he broke ranks with the WIPM party and formed his own political party the Saba Democratic Labour Movement (SDLM). In 1987 he was reelected to the Island Council and to the Executive Council. In 1990 he tendered his resignation as Commissioner and remained on as a member of the Island Council. In 1991 he did not seek re-election and quit active politics.
