"" is the 33rd & last letter of the Burmese Alphabet.

This letter is used in front of adjectives, colors, nicknames, and psychological nouns: (အပူ - heat, အချို - sweetness, အလိုချင် - want/desire အညို - brown color).


Transcription

When transcribing Burmese words and names to Romanization, this letter is often written as 'a'. In the IPA and on Wikipedia's page on the Burmese Alphabet, the letter is transcribed as 'ʔa'. [1]

History

This letter and the Burmese alphabet became used in the 10-11th century AD and were derived from earlier Mon and Pyu scripts. [2]

Because of this, this letter is similar to other vowels and letters in the scripts which surround Burma.
