Ravi Naimpally (Ravishankar Naimpally) born June 23, 1970 in Kanpur, UP is a tabla player, composer and teacher. Ravi showed an interest in music from a young age, playing classical guitar and then western drums. His father world renowned mathematician Somashekhar Naimpally (1931-2014) was a Hindustani music aficionado and encouraged Ravi's musical talents from a young age. Ravi's mother, Sudha Naimpally (Karnad) was a occupational therapist, a published poet, and an accomplished singer and songwriter. In 2017 Sudha released a CD of her bhajans, sung by Samidha Joglekar and produced by Dhiren Raichura. In 1984 Ravi's father had arranged a concert of Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, who was touring with tabla maestro Anindo Chatterjee. Meeting Pandit Chatterjee was one of the pivotal moments in Ravi's life and although Ravi had learned some tabla from his father and older brother Shiv Naimpally, it was at this point that Ravi decided to dedicate his life to the study of the tabla tradition. Soon after, Ravi began travelling to Mumbai, India in his summer holidays to apprentice with his uncle Padmabushan Pandit Nikhil Ghosh. During this time Ravi imbibed the techniques and repertoire of Poorab ang tabla. After the death of his uncle, Ravi continued his study of tabla with Pandit Anindo Chatterjee in Kolkata, India. For the past 17 years Ravi has been bringing Pandit Chatterjee to Toronto for workshops and performances.
