What is a coffeehouse?
A coffeehouse is an establishment which primarily serves hot coffee or coffee related beverages.[1]
Coffehouse(event)
The purpose of the coffeehouse event was to give students a place to go after school, socialize and homework. Whatever it may be it was to keep adolescents out of trouble and away from peers who just have a negative influence, like an afterschool program.
History of coffeehouses
In Egypt, coffee has been known to be around since the 12th century, but did not start serving as a drink until the 14th century.[2] Even though coffee is supposed to be a drink or beverage, it became a symbol of "lets get coffee", to sit and socialize with your peers. As years go on it becomes more and more developed in other countries. English coffeehouses of the 17th and 18th centuries was used as a sort of replacement for the lack of people having access to alcohol and a place where people would talk about more serious topics such as politics, gossip and current events. During the 17th century, they were no longer using or viewing coffee as a medicine plant and was starting to establish coffeehouses. Some of the first coffeehouses were being established as an alternative place for learning whilst still actively advancing their knowledge. As the coffeehouses were progressing, individuals were realizing that students were spending more time at the shops rather than at school. So was this the real beginning of the coffeehouse event or do you think it was just people or students socializing? Their sole purpose was more than just social interaction and gossip, it was a more serious place of discussion on topics with common interests. The coffeehouse was a place where all were welcome, whether they appeared homeless or not, as long as the could conversate. Originally, the coffeehouses acted as a main center for news, publications and increasingly became associated with news culture. During the 17th and 18th century, it was common as it is during the coffeehouse event for people to join together to engage in conversation and talk about current events or topics that matter and have meaning. So who really started the coffeehouse, did it just become a place of social interaction or was it a safe place for people to go?
