User:Roscelese/Canvassing incident
In August 2010, I was involved at a dispute over whether the Manhattan Declaration should be in the Category:Civil rights and liberties. Since I was new to the political domain of Wikipedia and had never before been involved in a content dispute, I was unaware of Wikipedia's policies against canvassing, and thus asked for support on a forum I frequent and on my personal blog. At the former, another user informed me (and the rest of the forum) of the policy; I acknowledged, and edited my post at the latter to reference the policy and specifically ask people not to join the discussion. Only one editor contributed who might have been drawn over by my posting, and said editor recommended keeping the category. This dispute ended without consensus either way (the page is currently not in the aforementioned category, but that's because it's now in the subcategory Category:Freedom of religion, which I also opposed and still oppose, and in the subcategory Category:LGBT rights in the United States). I am now aware of the canvassing policy; I have not canvassed and will not canvass on any more articles or any more disputes.
