birdsong is fledgling literary zine published quarterly by birdsong press, a non-profit organization based in Brooklyn, NY. Each issue of the zine includes poetry, visual art, short stories and thought pieces loosely tied around a sensory experience. Issues have included the themes unrequited, long, heat, and over.

Each edition of the publication is carefully handmade using traditional bookbinding and printing techniques, including thread-sewn five hole pamphlet stitch spines, as well as D.I.Y. techniques like rubber stamping and photocopying. The bulk of the zine's distribution is done by mail, but it is also officially distributed in a number of bookshops, cafés and bars in New York City, including in Manhattan: Bluestockings (bookstore), St. Mark's Bookshop on St. Mark's Place (Manhattan), Think Coffee, Cakeshop, and Joe's Coffee in the West Village; in Brooklyn: Desert Island Comics, Artist and Craftsman Supply, Variety Café, Stainbar, Blackbird Café, and Atlas Café.

The journal was founded in 2008 by American Indian poet, printer, and bookmaker Thomas Pico (b. [[1983). Tommy, a member of Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians, is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College with a BA in Liberal Arts. He moved to New York City in 2006 to pursue study in creative writing at The New School and to work as a bookmaker and printer at Softskull Press,
