The town was named Henties bay(in English) and Hentiesbaai (in Afrikaans). It situated 70 km north of Swakopmund and is predominantly a holiday settlement. An interesting feature is the seal colony of Cape Cross which is again situated 70 km north of the town.This small town is located in Erongo region.

Although the town was recently developed, is stated as the fastest growing town in the country. Henties Bay is also a suitable citing and luxury place for tourists mainly for its its unspoiled beach and lagoons which are close to the beach. There are luxury hotels and Lodges which employ good, experienced and well trained employees in order to serve tourists with better service. Most Namibian migrate to this town simply because it is peaceful, there is a rustic atmosphere, well established and the main idea is that there is a mass volume of job opportunities. It is quiet and there is low criminal rate due to well trained police officers and securities which are very serious about their job and care about safety of the Henties bay society at large.

Like the Namib Desert, the climate at the coast is extremely arid but temperatures are moderate due to the influence of the cold Benguela Current. Fog is brought in almost every night by onshore winds and the humidity is normally as high as 85% while the actual rainfall is less than 15 mm per year. Temperatures can however soar to over 40ºC and even higher when the hot, dry east wind or Bergwind is blowing.

Another interesting feature in the heart of the desert is the Tulongeni Gardening Project which is a community-based project , owned and run by the community as a job creation effort. The garden is situated in the valley, an old delta of the Omaruru River. Strong sweet water comes from boreholes provided by the Municipality and is pumped to the different sections of the garden.

Tulongeni garden is very productive which proved by crops of beans, baby marrow, potatoes, onions, strawberries, spinach, sweet potato, carrots and beetroot make up the bulk of the vegetables produced and those vegetables are marketed locally in Henties Bay and visitors are welcome to visit the new farm stall during shop hours to buy their fresh produce.
