Be a steward. Stewards are those who take care of an article; watching it over time; maintaining it with other editors who, in good faith, add, modify or improve the article; and protect against subtle vandalism. Stewards often have a personal interest in the topic, are experts on it, or are otherwise knowledgeable on it. Having a background on the topic is necessary to writing better articles.
