As an officer in the South African Defence Force, he contributed to Weapon Systems Development, Logistic Support System Design and obtained his Masters degree in Industrial Engineering in 1981 from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He worked as professional engineer for Iron and Steel Corporation South Africa for six years and was involved in the design and optimisation of asset and inventory management systems. In 1984 Salomon established a consultancy practice, which merged with a software systems development house Paradigm Systems Technology. The company successfully developed and implemented the integrated asset and logistic management for the South African Air Force and Navy. Successful Asset and Maintenance Management systems was also developed and implemented for the Steel, Utilities, Mining, Nuclear, Telecom, Aviation and Petrochemical Industries. This experience was used to complete his PhD in System Engineering and Logistic design in 1993 at Witwatersrand University, Johannesburg.

In 1994, the UK Royal Air Force appointed Paradigm Systems (Dr De Jager was head of the functional design team) as the integrated logistic solution provider. British Aerospace bought the company and Dr De Jager initiated a management buyout of the Industrial Division of Paradigm that became PiLog. PiLog's business evolved into catalogue and data content solutions and this led to the establishment of PiLog Data in 1999. It was De Jager's vision that data and data investments would become the assets of the future, and PiLog Data focussed on data, schemas, standards and e-solutions.
