Franchise History

[edit]

April - June 2009: Team Creation

The Magic City Misfits was founded in April of 2009 when a group of well renown Jamskaters had been watching Women's Flat Track Roller Derby and decided to expand a men's league. After a few weeks of coordination and talks went along a first practice and meeting was held at DeLand Skating Center in DeLand, FL on May 3rd 2009. The first practice saw about 12 men show up from the Central Florida area including referee's from Tampa's women's league who would go on to explain basic rules of the sport to the new members. Also in attendance was fellow professional Jamskater and all-star jammer of the Jacksonville Roller Girls Stephanie Gentz. The following weeks would see a dramatic fluctuation in attendance with many members coming and going. By the end of June 2009 the Magic City Misfits team was down to its five original members after seeing as many as eighteen and had also lost its practice venue and were invited to practice with the Jacksonville Roller Girls nearly a two hour drive away.

July - September 2009: First Games

On the second weekend of July 2009 The five members of the current Magic City Misfits traveled to Lewisville TX in participation of 2009 WSA Jamskating Nationals. Prior to the event the Men's Derby Coalition affiliated Dallas Deception offered to host a game with the visiting Magic City Misfits scheduled for Saturday July 11th. Dallas Deception offered two of their skaters along with allowing two skaters from Arkansas and one from California to join the Misfits Roster granting them a total of ten players for their first game. Dallas acquired players from St. Louis and Washington to fill their roster. Stephanie Gentz was brought in as the Misfits first head coach to lead the team against the Dallas Deception with her knowledge of Roller Derby and for how well she knew the skating ability of the original five Misfits members. With Gentz at the wheel and the experience of the guys from Arkansas the Magic City misfits fought a long battle leading at half time to only fall short by a handful points by the expiration of the game.

Only a week later the same five Misfits members along with one new member traveled to Biloxi Mississippi to pair up with the six members of the new Biloxi Bombers Men's Roller Derby team to host a game against Dallas Deception. A pre-game snafu was caused when Dallas Captains refused to allow all six Misfits members to play on terms that they considered they had just played Magic City misfits the week prior and wanted to play a majority of Biloxi. The Misfits/Bombers were forced to bench CALKINBALLS for the first half of the game. The first Jam of the game would see a Biloxi jammer and 3 blockers along with Quench Ur Thurston of the Magic City Misfits. Matomic of Dallas Deception racked up 25 points in the first jam including five grand slam passes. The remainder of the first half would continue to heavily favor Dallas and see injuries suffered to the Bombers. With a major deficit in score and loss of several Bombers players due to injuries and one ejection, Dallas agreed to allow CALKINBALLS to join play the second half. The rest of the game would see big jams and big hits from both team in an all out warfare style of play. By the expiration of the game the Dallas Deception had won by a land slide.

Nearly a month later four of the five main Misfits would travel to St. Louis Missouri to play the first game in a men’s/women’s double header, the second game of which was the Arch Rivals Roller Girls Season Championship game. Streak and Just The Tip would be placed on the Monsters of the Midwest team while Powder and Quench Ur Thurston would skate under the Southern Scallywags along with members Megasoreass and Mancakes with whom they had played alongside in Dallas. The game was a hitting explosion for its duration but the Monsters of the Midwest jamming capabilities and team work proved too much for the Scallywags.

October - December 2009: Expansion and Loss

After nearly four months from the time the Misfits lost their venue for practice they finally settled in to practice at Deltona Skating Rink in Deltona FL. During this practice the Magic City Misfits showed the same generosity the Jacksonville Roller Girls had shown them by opening practice to all genders and ages. During a routine practice in October 2009 with a short attendance the Magic City Misfits suffered their greatest loss so far with the passing of one of their newest and most dedicated members. During the last drill of endurance newest team member "Woody" collapsed on his final lap of a passing drill.

The Misfits continued to recruit and practice both at home and in Jacksonville with men and women. Streak, Powder and Just the Tip were moved into coaching spots for the Jacksonville Roller Girls league. In the last week of November 2009 tensions erupted during a normal scrimmage at Deltona Skating Rink between the Misfits and the women's league they had allowed to practice in the venue. As a result of Just the Tip, Streak, Powder and CALKINBALLS walking away in order to avoid further hostilities the Misfits again lost their venue for practice.

During December of 2009 members of the Magic City Misfits participated in several events. Streak and Just The Tip attended a mixed playoff and skills contest in Dallas Texas. Powder, CALKINBALLS, Streak and Just The Tip played din a Co-ed charity holiday bout with the Jacksonville Roller Girls in Jacksonville Titled "Naughty vs. Nice".
