Milli Bau (1929-2003) born in DARMSTADT, Germany in a wealthy family. In 1965 she started to explore the world with her newly bought Volkswagen. Her first trip was to the Amazonian forest. She is an outstanding example of a female explorer travelling on her own all around the world including Bolivia, Peru, China, Tibet, Iraq, Syria and Iran. Her unique analog photographs documenting her extensive travels are an imortant source and archive to be explored. In 1969 she traveled to Iran, after which she published in 1971 a book titled ´Iran wie er wirklich ist´. Her black and white photographs of Shiraz, Isfehan and Hamadan are a unique document of the social life of Iran, showing market life, working conditions, transport, education and development, factories and female social and work life of pre-revolutionary Iran. After her death in 2003, her unique archive was donated to Weltkulturen Museum in Frankfurt. Her books were donated to the Goethe University of Frankfurt.
