Gameplay

[edit]

Hypixel has various multiplayer minigames created by modifying and repurposing the game mechanics of Minecraft.[1][2] Its players can purchase cosmetics and ranks that allow for certain in-game abilities.[1] The game consists of a lobby system where players can come together and team up for minigames.[3] The lobby is also a place which holds a few secrets for players to discover.[3]

Hypixel frequently holds in-game events. Because of this, it always stays active.[3] Additionally, players are presented with tournaments for various minigames.[3]

Bed Wars

[edit]

The physical layout of Bed Wars consists of floating team islands with iron and gold generators, diamond generator islands, and a central emerald generator island. Diamond generators tend to be right next to the team islands while emerald generators are shared by everyone in the center. A player starts off the game by, first and foremost, collecting resources with his/her team on their island. These resources are to then be used for purchase of various items such as weapons, blocks, and tools. The primary goal of the team is to defend their bed from being destroyed by other teams. Throughout the game, team members can respawn after death. However, in the scenario where bed destruction occurs, the members of that team are prevented from respawning and die permanently. As such, teams aim to destroy other teams' beds to prevent them from respawning and becoming the last team standing. The aforementioned items which can be purchased through resources may or may not aid in accomplishing this goal.[5]

Resources
[edit]

As mentioned before, players may choose to purchase items by collecting resources of different use through resources generators. Iron and gold is generated right on the team's island, diamond on the diamond generator islands, and emerald on the center island. Iron and gold are the most abundant and can be used for purchasing basic items. However, the iron and gold cost of certain items may be higher depending on its value. Blocks which can be purchased include wool, end stone, wood, blast-proof glass, and hardened clay. Depending on their durability, they can either be used as a means of bed defense or bridging between islands. Tools/weaponry that can be purchased include swords (wood, stone, iron, and diamond), armor (wood, stone, iron, and diamond), bows, arrows, TNT, water buckets, and golden apples. Everything else which can be purchased requires obtaining the more scarce resources of diamond and emerald.[5]

Unlike iron and gold, diamond generates at a much slower rate on islands next to each team island. Obtaining diamond allows for a player to purchase traps and enhancements for the team. An example of a trap is Miner Fatigue Trap. Enhancements include Protection I, which enhances individual team members' defense, and Sharpness, which increases damage dealt by team members.[5]

Finally, the hardest of the resources to obtain is emerald. The reason this is the case is that it is a singular island shared by all teams which means that a player has to figure out ways to obtain emerald with other enemies on the same island. Additionally, emerald is the resource which takes the longest to generate. However, many useful items can be purchased using emerald. Examples include speed, jump boost, and invisibility potions and obsidian, which is the most durable block, ender pearls, and bridge eggs. [5]

But, if a player ends up dying in any way while holding any of these resources, including the items purchased with it, he/she loses all of it. Therefore, death is still something to be avoided, even with the bed intact.[5]

Sudden Death
[edit]

If, after a certain period of time, no team has won yet the game enters a point called Sudden Death where every team's bed is automatically destroyed and Ender Dragons appear and begin destroying everything, including blocks not put by players (e.g. islands). In this case, bridging becomes risky due to the potential of a dragon—or player—knocking the player off in the process. At this point, the game continues on in this manner until one team remains and thus wins the match.[5]
