Swedish Committee for Afghanistan (SCA) is a non-governmental, non-political, non-profit and humanitarian organization.

SCA has been active in Afghanistan for more than 27 years. Today the organization is active in 16 provinces in the Eastern and Northern part of Afghanistan, running four major programmes in the fields of Education, Health, Disability and Rural Development. The programmes are financed by Sida (Swedish International Development Agency), European Union, World Bank, Forum Syd and by SCA's own fundraising. SCAs main office is in Kabul. Project offices are located in Ghazni city (Ghazni), Maidan Shahr (Wardak), Jalalabad (Nangarhar), Taloqan (Takhar), Kunduz city (Kunduz), Mazar-e-Sharid (Balkh).

SCA emphasizes the importance of cooperation with local communities, authorities and institutions, to enable Afghans to have a central role in their own development. Building skills and local capacity is considered crucial for the continuity and sustainability of all development endeavours.

SCA was established in 1980 in Sweden, to protest against the Soviet Unions occupation of Afghanistan. SCA is currently employing more than 5000 Afghan staff and only 15 expatriate staff.

In Sweden SCA is an organization driven by the commitment and support of approximately 4,500 members who are organized into11 local branches across Sweden. These members are involved in information and fundraising activities, including study groups and seminars on Afghanistan, festivals, fairs and exhibitions, twin school projects and media events. All work is done on a voluntary basis. The Stockholm office is the base for all activities in Sweden, including management, administrative and operational support.

Facts from SCA Programmes

Education
Today some 113,000 students, of which 48 % are girls have access to education through SCA support to Model Schools, Community Based Education classes and Girls’ Annexes. SCA also supports the Ministry of Education by sharing its experience and knowledge, seconding staff and facilitating training to Masters Level for the Ministry staff through MAP - a Master level training of institutional cooperation between the University of Karlstad (Sweden) and partner Universities in Finland, Germany and Nepal and the University of Nangarhar.

Health
SCA is responsible for medical services to 1,2 million Afghans in rural areas of Laghman, Samangan and Sarepul provinces. Up to 2008, SCA has trained 63 midwives in its Wardak Community Midwifery Center (WCMC) and 64 other midwives in Jalabad, Kunduz and Nuristan.

Rehabilitation
Through Rehabilitation of Afghans with Disability (RAD) Programme SCA annually reaches over 300,000 beneficiaries in 13 provinces through a network of orthopedic workshops, physiotherapy clinics and community centers.

Rural Development
SCA’s Engineering Project has since its establishment in 1992 constructed and repaired 323 schools, 3 hospitals, 3 orthopedic workshops, 151 clinics and 14,414 wells.
