Typical college courses specifically disallow using Wikipedia as a reference when researching papers. The argument is that anyone can write or edit the material. The standard requirement for reference material is that it be scholarly and 'peer reviewed'. This seems like a contradiction of terms, in my opinion. After all, what is 'peer reviewed' if not subjecting an article to to review and correction by all those that should take an interest in it? So, instead of receiving the front-line credit it deserves, Wikipedia has the dubious honor of being the 'source behind the scenes,' since it is the quickest way to get the basic information on any subject.
