Tinners Way (aka "Tinners") is an American Thoroughbred sired by 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat and dam Devon Diva out of stakes winner and sire of stakes winners The Minstrel. Born in 1990 to Secretariat's final crop, he was his sires last graded stakes winning colt. Marked with promise, his career spanned multiple countries, tracks and surfaces. He began running on European turf in 1992 and concluded on American dirt courses in 1996. His earnings exceeded 1.8 million dollars which established him, along with Risen Star, Lady's Secret, and others as one of his sires top performers. Tinners Way is best remembered for his consecutive wins in the Pacific Classic.
Career Highlights
[edit]Bred by and running for Juddmonte Farms his career began with a 7 furlong maiden win on British turf at Doncaster in his first and only race in 1992. In 1993, running turf courses in England, France and in the United States, he captured two stakes wins and two shows in graded races for a record of 4 for 7 finishing in the top 3. In 1994 he remained in the United States competing in California for 8 starts and at New York's Belmont Park for an additional two. Now under the training of Hall-of-Fame trainer Bobby Frankel, he began the season’s bids on dirt courses. Of these races, he finished 6 in the top 3 with 2 firsts, 3 seconds and one third. He recorded a place in Santa Anita’s G3 Arcadia Handicap, his only turf competition for the year. But for two heats, all were graded, including his first winning of the G1 10 furlong Pacific Classic at Del Mar. In 1995 he ran 6 times, 5 of which were on dirt courses. Of the latter, Tinners secured a record consecutive win in the Pacific Classic, a race where he bested 1994's Breeder's Cup Classic champion Concern; 2 places including a second to the great Cigar in the G1 10 furlong Hollywood Gold Cup, and one show. His only turf competition for the year was booked in the G1 Arlington Million at Arlington Park where he finished 4 1/4th lengths behind the winner Awad. The 1996 slate opened with a win in the G1 9 furlong Californian at Hollywood Park, but in a turn of events, the victory was followed by a loss in his second running of the Hollywood Gold Cup. In his next race, his third running of the Pacific Classic, Tinners Way pulled early and exited the contest with an injury. In the wake of this performance he never competed again. For the season he finished one of three in the top 3: one first, and two no-shows.
In all, Tinners Way finished 17 of 27 starts in the top 3 with 7 firsts, 6 seconds and 4 thirds. He captured 3 major wins (G1) in the Pacific Classic (two consecutive victories) and the Californian, and another win in the Golden Gate Fields Breeders' Cup Handicap (ungraded); seconds in the Hollywood Gold Cup (G1), the Arcadia Handicap on turf (G3), the Mervyn LeRoy Handicap (G2), the Bel Air Handicap (G2), and the Goodwood Handicap (G2); and thirds in the San Bernadino Handicap (G2), the Californian (G1), the Singer and Friedlander Greenham Stakes (G3) in England, and in the Prix de la Foret (G1) at Longchamp, France. He equaled track records in his first Pacific Classic victory and in his second running of the Californian.
Tinners Way was boarded by Hall of Fame inductees Ed Delahoussaye, his most successful rider; Pat Day, and Kent Desormeaux who guided 1998's Triple Crown bid on Real Quite and who more recently led Big Brown's efforts in the 2008 Triple bid.
Tinners final earnings amounted to 1,847,734 dollars.
Retirement
[edit]Tinners Way assumed stallion duties at Vinery, Kentucky in 1996; and then in 2000 was sold to the Harris Farm operation in California where he stood for three years. He was then relocated to the Key Ranch breeding firm in Texas where he currently resides. His progeny includes stakes winner Tin Man Commin, Only One Way, and others.
