Climate change is a challenge affecting development, especially in a developing country like Nigeria. Lagos State is particularly very prone to the impacts of climate change.https://csdevnet.org/wp-content/uploads/Towards-aLagos-Adaptation-Strategy.pdf.

Climate change has had devastating effect on the planet, from flooding, to drought, increase in temperature, rise in sea level, increasing the frequency, ocean acidity, whether intensity.https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/02/lagos-prone-to-climate-change-impacts-tunji-bello/

The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tunji Bello, also confirmed that Lagos State remains the most exposed and endangeded to climate change hence a quick solution must be put in place to stem down the negative impact of climate change on Lagos State. There was also a

climate risk assessment report which was carried out by the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, with the support of the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, discovered that about 6,983 buildings were under threats from flooding across Lagos state. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/02/lagos-prone-to-climate-change-impacts-tunji-bello/ The climate change if not curbed could result in widespread ecosystem degradation, thus disrupting socio-economic development and the welfare of the people.

In order to protect Laos State from the effect of Climate change, a plan was designed to tackle climate change. which is the The Lagos state Climate Action Plan.

The Lagos Climate Action Plan is a five year plan from 2020-2025, which is designed to combat climate change challenges affecting Lagos State. The plan is is to achieve a Zero Carbon Lagos by 2025. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/ssouth-west/466570-climate-change-lagos-govt-unveils-five-year-action-plan.html

Aims of the Lagos state Climate Action Plan.

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu spoke at the International Climate Change Summit in Victoria Island about what CAP is about and he said CAP is designed to achieve a paramount goal which is to achieve a zero-carbon state. He said before the Paris Climate Change Conference in 2015, Lagos State had started the process of developing

Climate Change Policy and Action Plan and the Action Plan has been updated to accomodate the targets and goals of the Paris Climate Change Agreement.

”The product is the ‘Lagos Climate Action Plan: Second Five-year Plan 2020- 2025’. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/ssouth-west/466570-climate-change-lagos-govt-unveils-five-year-action-plan.html Lagos State is the first state in Nigeria to have taken the step to put together a Climate Action Plan to help achieve an emission-free city by 2050.

This goal was achievable because Lagos State had signed up for the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, which they signed and joined in 2018. The group has supported Lagos State in achieving and coming up with an updated Climate Action Plan which is in line with the prevailing realities and situation in Lagos State. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/ssouth-west/466570-climate-change-lagos-govt-unveils-five-year-action-plan.html

Mr Tunji Bello, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, explained that 26 initiatives have been put in place in order to achieve the Climate Action Plan which is zero carbon emission by 2050.https://punchng.com/lagos-moves-to-reduce-climate-change-impacts/

CAP is designed to align with the goals of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, the vision is to reduce the average global temperature rise to 1.5°C. which is an effort to bring down climate mitigation by reducing emissions. The CAP is also designed to intensify the strength of Lagos’s population, economy and infrastructure to resist the impacts of climate change. It also seeks to create a cleaner, greener, healthier, stable and more prosperous Lagos in the face of climate change.https://cdn.locomotive.works/sites/5ab410c8a2f42204838f797e/content_entry5ab410faa2f42204838f7990/5ad0ab8e74c4837def5d27aa/files/C40_Lagos_Final_CAP.pdf?1626096978

Sanwo-Olu buttresses further, “Last year, Lagos State took a giant leap by launching the Lagos Climate Action Plan: Our second Five-year Plan covering 2020 – 2025. This plan highlights evidence-based and inclusive climate action that will help create a more resilient Lagos for all.

“In just a year, I can say with great confidence that the Lagos Climate Action Plan has started to deliver great and impactful rewards, including attracting the attention of critical supporters and partners. For example, there is the recently awarded grant by the UK Government (Future Cities Nigeria) to the Lagos State Waterways Authority to improve the ferry services across the State, which will further support our efforts to provide a truly multi-modal transport network for Lagos, with the consequent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions associated with road transportation.

“We have recognised that inaction in the face of the devastating impact of Climate Change is not an option. No one will be left untouched. Even worse is the impact on the most vulnerable among us: Women, Children Persons living with Disabilities, and the poor. These categories of people are bound to disproportionately bear the brunt of extreme weather events.https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2022/08/03/lagos-climate-summit-resolutions-saved-victoria-island-says-sanwo-olu/
