Born in Sulaymaniyah in Kurdistan Iraq, Serwan Hoshyar attended elementary and high school, both up north and in Baghdad. While studying arts at ‘The Institute of fine Arts’ in Baghdad between 1969 and 1974 he also became part of a small group of artists/illustrators/cartoonists whom pioneered the first children publication (Majalaty) in Baghdad. After graduating from ‘The Institute of fine Arts’ in 1974, he left to Italy, where he continued his higher studies at 'The Academy of Fine Arts' In Rome. After graduation, he took some further studies in visual design and continued working as an Artist. Between ‘1974 –1988’ he also (on and off) worked as translator for the Iraqi Embassy.

In 1988 he left to reside permanently in Sydney, Australia, where he worked as a freelance designer and marketing consultant. He also attempted law studies for three years before a serious car accident put this last venture on hold. He is currently an Australian citizen and still works as a freelance Artist and does some legal translations. At the time of his hospitalisation, he started working on a book project, a fiction/autobiography which he recently finished and awaiting its publication.

From 1976 to 1995, Serwan Hoshyar has engaged in (21) Personal and collective Art exhibitions, both in Italy and Australia. He has also designed many corporate logos and trademarks for various industries and institutions.
