Operation Valkyrie

[edit]

”Operation Valkyrie” is the code name for a military operation which made it possible for the Replacement army to take control in an emergency situation over the German capital city Berlin. Col. von Stauffenberg used this code name as a code name for his secret plan to get rid of head of state Adolf Hitler thus producing an emergency situation and then try to overwhelm the current Nazi regime with the help of the reserve army.

Col. von Stauffenberg's plan was to place a bomb in a meeting room in a hut near the Wolf's Liar during a meeting with Hitler. Unfortunately the explosion didn't reach him and didn't cause any harm to him. Immediately after the explosion Col. von Stauffenberg acted in accordance with his secret plan to publish and broadcast the news of Hitler's death thus producing an emergency situation that allowed him and his co-conspirators to seize the power with help of the reserve army.

Critical Recept.

[edit]

Jens Jenssen of the culturally demanding German magazine “Die Zeit” is seeing the film in ambiguous way. Bryan Singers work doesn't provide any reason for the bizarre excitement that was caused by the announcement that Hollywood is making a film about “the” legendary figure of the German Resistance Claus Count von Stauffenberg. On the one hand he is appreciating that the German viewer doesn't need to be anxious that Tom Cruise would use the role of the Hitler-assassion for publicity purposes for the Scientology-sect, which he is belonging to. Tom Cruise is embracing his role as a German officer with appropriate cautiousness and humbleness, although his portrayal lacks charisma or at least the aggressive energy, that is typical of characters portrayed by Tom Cruise otherwise.

There is no need to be anxious that the image of the persecuted German Resistance might be conveyed/associated to/with the Scientology sect, which is assuming itself as persecuted in Germany nowadays. But on the other hand the film didn't succeed in conveying the image of a superstar to the fading reminiscence of the German hero, to make him world-famous and revive him. This bizarre claim, to improve the image of the Germans in the world, was evoked by the german director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck who qualified the film as ”an improvement of the image that is ten times larger than the effect realized through the soccer world cup”. These expectations that were aroused by stupid and hysterical media, they were tactically revoked by the paleness and self-effacement, but even so the seriosity of the film.
