Home Video Release

[edit]

On November 16, 2008 Walt Disney Home Entertainment released the animation film on DVD and Blu-ray hi-def. The 3 Disc Special Edition contains several bonus features like the documentary "Animation Sound Design: Building Worlds from Sound Up" featuring Oscar - winning sound designer Ben Burtt who explains the art of sound design using examples from Wall-e. Another featurette is "The Pixar Story - A Documentary by Leslie Iwerks" a documentary that contains archival animation, footage from the Pixar- library and interviews with animators, studio executives, directors, producers and voice performers who outline how the studio developed the new techniques that contributed to its success.[2]

DVD

[edit]

The featurette "Behind the Scenes" consists of six films that demonstrate the making of Wall-e, including visual design, character development, musical score, special effects and the building of robots. The film "The Captain's Log" shows that humans were supposed to be aliens alike boneless green blobs. Stanton says that it was considered to take "people out of the movie". [3] The DVD also contains the shorts "Burn-E" about a repair robot of the same name and "Presto". "Presto" is the original theatrical short film about a star magician's ego that provokes revenge from the rabbit co-star. [2]

Another bonus feature the "Buy n Large Shorts" consists of five short films about the inner workings of the company and how finally the plan was developed to bring EVE into the space. You can also see how to operate the Axiom, the line of "'robots for every need'" and learn more about the Earth Exit Plan.[2]

In the 3-Disc-DVD Special Edition is included the "DisneyFile" Digital Copy, a file that enables the screening of the film as a digital version in the iTunes or Windows Media format on their Mac, PC and/or compatible portable device.[2]

Blue Ray

[edit]

In addition to the features available on DVD the Blu-ray hi-def version includes several other features.

Background

[edit]

Typical of work of animators is that they have to deal with characters like Wall-e and EVE, who don't communicate per traditional dialogue with each other und don't convey any emotions. Andrew Stanton explains that "In the world of animation pantomime is the thing that animators love best. It's their bread and butter."[4] Furthermore he explains that working on pantomime was enlightning for him. He realized this when watching Charly Chaplin movies and movies featuring Michael Keaton on an every-day-basis during his work on Wall-e.."[5]

Andrew Stanton clearly prefered Ben Burtt as sound designer for the flm, because of his extended experience in sound design that he gained when working on the voice of R2-D2, the Indiana Jones franchise The Temple of Doom or Alien. Ben Burtt used a library of 2400 sound files to create the sounds and to develop the voices of Wall-e and EVE.."[6]
