Dilip Parameshwar Gaonkar is an associate professor of communication studies at Northwestern University specializing in rhetorical theory and cultural studies. He is also the co-director of the Center for Transcultural Studies, also located at Northwestern, and is executive editor of the academic journal Public Culture, published by Duke University Press. Goankar received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh.

His specific research interests include rhetoric and the human sciences, the relationship between rhetoric and literary/cultural theory, and globalization of culture and communication. In 1996, Routledge published Disciplinarity and Dissent in Cultural Studies, a collection of essays edited by Gaonkar and Cary Nelson. In addition to serving as executive editor of Public Culture, Gaonkar is also a regular contributor and guest edited a special issue of the journal published in 1999 and entitled Alternative Modernities. The issue was later expanded into an essay collection of the same name, also edited by Gaonkar and published in 2001 by Duke University Press.
