5-fluoro orotic acid or 5-FOA is a small molecule used for negative selection against presence of the URA3 gene in yeast strains. The conversion of 5-FOA to 5-fluorouracil by OMP decarboxylase leads eventually to the accumulation of a downstream toxic metabolite, fluorodeoxyuridylate.
