Dave Gallaher (1873–1917) was a New Zealand rugby union footballer who captain of the 1905–06 New Zealand national team – "Original All Blacks" — on their tour of the British Isles, France and North America. Gallaher immigrated to New Zealand from Ireland as a child, and eventually settled in Auckland. After playing club rugby for Ponsonby RFC, he was first selected to represent Auckland province in 1896. He served with the New Zealand Contingent in the Anglo-Boer War, and on his return was first selected for New Zealand representative team when he participated in their unbeaten 1903 tour of Australia. He was selected as captain for New Zealand's 1905–06 tour of the British Isles – the first ever by a New Zealand representative team – but despite the team's success he was relentlessly pilloried by the British press for his role as wing-forward. Critics felt critics felt position existed to deliberately and illegally obstruct opponents. On his return from tour he retired as a player and took up coaching and selecting. During the First World War, Gallaher enlisted in the New Zealand Division to fight in Europe, and was killed in 1917 at the Battle of Passchendaele.
