Although they do not generally admit it openly, it seems uncontroversial to say that a fair amount of English Wikipedia editors of articles about Japanese media such as anime, manga, and video games, rely on either machine translation or unofficial translations of Japanese sources to flesh out these articles. This is a small essay on the use of such translations and how one may want to consider their use.

Foreign language sources are permitted as citations on the English Wikipedia. However, most editors of the English Wikipedia are not proficient in foreign languages, and while some Wikipedians may be available to verify translations, they may not always be available to assist in every such case. As such, it may be difficult for editors to quickly utilize such sources,
