Article title
Convergence (sustainability science)
Article Evaluation

The article is relevant to our class as it does relate directly to the help of increasing sustainability within world practices. It helps with energy justice and using policies/structures to increase the concept of putting the environment first. The information presented so far is written clearly and without any bias. Each of the claims so far does have a proper citation and the citations are from case studies, research, and peer-reviewed journals.

Wikipedia wants the article to be expanded and I also felt that was appropriate. I want to specifically expand on the strategy of friction or being frictionless. I want to find real-world examples that can give insight to current day applications of this term. Our very own UW Foster Business School building applied this method of convergence through constructing the mainframe of the building with more costly and environmentally friendly materials for the sake of sustainability. It also incorporated a few other forms of convergence.

Sources I'm Considering:

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0270467602022004001

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0958166903000685 - This peer-revied journal goes over the use of nanotechnology and how it can be used to build a more sustainable environment.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S098194282300342X - This journal published just last year goes over how nanoparticles can be used to lessen the stress crops and strengthen agriculture practices in being more beneficial for nature.

Option 2[edit]

Article title
Uneven and combined development
Article Evaluation

This article is unbiased but does seem to base a lot of information/concepts from an original source. Wikipedia (and the talk page) has also flagged it for including information that is not necessarily related to the topic. I wish to personally expand on the ending of the article by adding in more real-life depictions of this concept. I also want to research and try to find better secondary sources as that is another area of concern on the talk page (although there are many listed sources listed already).

Sources I'm Considering:

https://www.businessperspectives.org/images/pdf/applications/publishing/templates/article/assets/12402/PPM_2019_03_Rui.pdf - This PDF on China talks about uneven development

Option 3[edit]

Article title
Sacrifice zone
Article Evaluation

The article is simple and well written at the same time. The lead section is brief and gets the point across. It mentions how these zones come to take place and very broadly mentions its due to practices by corporations and governments letting it happen. I want to expand and add a section on "Fracking" and how it applies here specifically. There is a page on Wikipedia that already talks about fracking but not in context to these sacrifice zones which I believe is very important to understanding the health risks and severity of this practice on people. The fracking page talks about health risks but not very deeply. It goes much more into depth on the economic factors and therefor the benefits of this said practice.

Sources

https://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlehtml/2020/rp/d0rp00022a - Although this article ahs to do with England, I think it is a very good execution of tying in fracking with sacrifice zones and that too with the insights of those who live within proximity to these areas.

https://www.proquest.com/docview/2586004391?pq-origsite=gscholar&fromopenview=true&sourcetype=Dissertations%20&%20Theses - This is a thesis published (And also included in our own UW library) that talks on fracking and politics in terns of imperialism. I believe this could be a strong way of tying the two in and how it is a combination of corporate and government/political power that lets these injustices happen. We may have the EPA but they allow these sacrifice zones to come into fruition and this is a clear form of environmental racism in my opinion.

Option 4[edit]

Article title
Biodiesel
Article Evaluation

This article is very detailed and long. It is definetley a much more solid article compared to the rest of the articles in my propositions. But I want to specifically expand the section that talks about "Energy Security". This section is brief compared to many other ones and only covers the basics on what energy security is and not how it is useful in terms of biodiesel. Although it mentions that suing biodiesel will reduce the dependency on oil, it doesn't talk about the process or how biodiesel is a much better alternative to oil when it comes to this (is this personal bias?). I'm still debating this article because it is overall covered very heavily and does go over emissions as well as effects of this energy type earlier in the article. Also, the talk page mentions expanding other sections and Wikipedia says it already has a lot of excessive details.

Sources

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0960852420300730 - This journal published in 2020 talks about the benefits microalgae for biodiesel production could be not only cost effective but also helps with environmental pollution control which I think is a very god example of energy justice as well.

https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/13/10/5465 - This journal puts in context how air pollution caused by engine emissions can be mitigated thanks to the use of biodiesel energy instead. It goes into numbers and stats of biodiesel emissions vs our current day form of oil use.

Option 5[edit]

Article title
Algal nutrient solution
Article Evaluation

This is a very short article that although is a good start, is nowhere near finished. The lead section requires more detail especially in the aspect of bioenergy and how it is useful as not only a form of production of energy but also as a standalone material. The properties it provide in terms of both fuel and control are very beneficial. I think it would also be appropriate to mention how this form of biofuel production is becoming a leading contender.

Sources

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0045653521024164 - This article goes over the as a potential source for creating bioenergy. It talks about how the compositions that makeup algae can be processes for biofuel. Lastly but most importantly it discusses how the nutrient assimilation of algae could help in absorbing our current day environmental issues with pollution.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0045653521004975

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0301479721013190

- Both these journals talk about the benefits of microalgae for wastewater treatment as it both strengthens the process and make it faster.

Extra:

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1877343520300816 - This journal goes over solutions that reuse the available nutrients, chemicals, and materials from wastewater for sustainability and energy conservation whether it is in agriculture or other sectors.
