Private ownership of firearms, including pistols and rifles, has been an important part of the culture of American life since the enshrinement of the Second Amendment of the Constitution. While only about one-third of US households owns a firearm[a], the US has far and away the most guns per capita in the world. This culture relates to self-defense and hunting, but has also impacted the development of local law enforcement across the country.
