Avoid is a new weather radar for ash. The system is called Avoid, a short for Airborne Volcanic Object Indentifier and Detector[1][2].
Avoid was created by Dr Fred Prata of the Norwegian Insitute for Air Reasearch [2]. Avoid uses infra-red tenchology [1], that see the ash cloud 62 miles ahead of the aircraft [1] [2]. Avoid opeates at altitudes between 5,000 and 50,000 feet.[3] Information from a plane equipped with Avroid along with satellite data would be used to build an accurate map of the volcanic ash.[4]
Budget airline easyJet will be the first to trial the avoid system [1][2]. An Airbus 340 plane will be used during the trial.[3]
