Jürgen Herzog (born December 21, 1941 in Heidelberg, Germany) is an Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at University of Duisburg-Essen, in Essen, Germany. From 1969 to 1975, he was Lecturer at University of Regensburg and from 1975 to 2009 a professor of Mathematics at University of Duisburg-Essen. He received his Ph.D. at Louisiana State University in 1969 under the supervision of Professor Ernst A. Kunz. He is an expert in the field of Commutative Algebra and its interactions to other mathematical fields such as Combinatorics.

Herzog has published several notable books which are considered as the main sources in the fields of Commutative Algebra and Combinatorial Commutative Algebra, Cohen-Macaulay rings (1993), Monomial Ideals (2011), Binomial Ideals (2018).

He has published over 220 research articles in mathematics and served as thesis advisor to more than 18 doctoral students, many of whom have had distinguished careers in Commutative Algebra. Since 2000 he is the corresponding member of the Academia Peloritana dei Pericolanti di Messina.
