We chose to improve an existing article, Terrorism and Social Media. Within this article, there are several components that could be included to fully reflect the way terrorism operates within social media platforms; more specifically, we would like to add extensive information regarding ISIS’s methodology in advancing their goals through these mediums.

Terrorist groups like the Islamic State have become one of the most active users of social media; they have gone on to successfully recruit members through platforms like Facebook and Twitter. We wish to expand on how ISIS used social media as a way to recruit members, instill fear in ordinary citizens through their gruesome posts, and ultimately spread their message about religion/politics within the Islamic State.

The references on the original article are mostly from non academic sources like websites and newspapers. As a result, we plan to incorporate more academic links such as research papers and other relevant literature. Some sources will revolve around ISIS's social media strategy and others will focus on the spreading of their propaganda and pertinent effects. Since there is little information on their propaganda, we hope to compile our sources to expand on this section.

Finalize Your Topic/Find Your Sources[edit]

After group collaboration, we have chosen to expand on the Terrorism and Social Media page. We would like to add more links to each section with pertinent information about the topic, add sub-headers specific to ISIS, and include relevant hashtags that accurately reflect the goals of this movement. After extensive research on ISIS's social media campaign and how it initially gained traction, we will carefully mark the timeline of this movement with respect to relevant external occurrences.

Article Evaluation[edit]

This article was well-written and the bolded references were applicable to the overall tone of the article. I also was able to check out the citations, and they worked. I think the article differs from what we've talked about in class since it utilizes more structure and factual information. In class, the discussion about internet activism is more open-ended and facilitated through active discussion. In that sense, I feel that these two discussions could be similar. I feel that the article displays a good sense of neutrality since it touches on more examples with factual evidence, versus more opinionated pieces. References appear to be accurate as well.
