Miss Sophie Irvine[edit]
Sophie Irvine is a 30 year old university graduate from the East coast of Edinburgh. Born in Edinburgh at the Simpsons hospital on the 28th of April 1991 at ten past 3 in the morning. Sophie is the daughter of Susan Irvine and Graham Irvine and has one brother called Robbie who is 27 and a sister Katie who is 24. She lives at home with her mum, brother and three cats at the moment. She has natural blonde hair, blue eyes and I am 5 ft 7 inches tall.

Hobbies and interests[edit]
Sophie has many hobbies and interests which she fills her time with when not searching for her career and dream job. In her spare time she enjoys cooking and find this very relaxing. This helps with her anxieties and she loves exploring new foods and cultures. Sophie enjoys recieving good feedback for her food and critisicm which helps her improve her cooking skills. Sophie also enjoys visiting musums - soaking up the culture and history and viewing the collections gives her great excitement. She likes socialising with friends and enjoys nothing more than going out to the pub with friends and enjoying great food and drinks. She enjoys watching live music bands and dancing which helps her relax and enjoy herself. Sophies family mean the absolute world to her and nothing gives her greater pleasure than spending quality time with them. Her brother has autism and she spends alot of her time with him helping him with his life skills and just going out to the enjoy the world. Sophie loves going on holidays and weekend breaks and find this is a good way to unwind. She enjoys trying new cultures food, music and history and it just makes her feel so happy. Sophie has three cats; Dottie, Daisy and Dolly who are her world and she loves spending time with them and getting loads of cuddles from them. She enjoys scenic walks in the country and stopping off for some lunch somewhere with a perfect view.
Career and Research[edit]
Study history[edit]
Sophie started her studies in further education at the age of 19 once she graduated from 6th year at Muselburgh Grammar School. After achieving five intermediate qualifications she went on to study at Edinburgh college in Events management and Hospitality Management, both at HND level. This then enabled her to progress onto 'Queen Margaret University' where she completed her Bachelor of Arts with Honours in International Hospitality and Tourism Management achieving at 2:1. With help from lecturers Sophie was able to apply to the University of Glasgow where she completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Museum Studies: Theory and Practice with Merit. This is where she discovered her passion for archiving and preserving historical documents. She also found a love for collections management systems and pest management which she hopes she will have the opportunity to use in a role in the archive and record management sector.
Dissertation[edit]
Having a personal connection to autism and having a passion for museums Sophie decided to bring her love of both together to create her dissertation topic around both subjects. She worked hard with her dissertation supervisor to come up with the topic 'What does the museum sector provide for children on the autism spectrum?' This research process was an eye opener and helped identify the gaps in the museum sector for special needs children. Sophie was able to interview special needs teachers, parents of children with ASD, Autism charities and the national museum scotland. Through this process she was able to identify gaps and provide suggestions to remove this gap from the museum sector.
Work experience[edit]
Sophie has has various work experiences of the museum and archive sector which have helped her gain the knowledge and experience that she posesses today. She has worked in the tourism industry for most of her working career and has established connections in the field. She has worked as a castle guide at Edinburgh castle, and have various experiences of working in visitor services at Rosslyn Chapel, Edinburgh Butterfly World and Dynamic Earth. This has given her the experience and knowledge of front of house which is an important knowledge to have if you want to gain a career in archives and collections management.
Over the past few years Sophie has built up experience and knowledge in the museum and archive sector which has given her hands on experience and the practical ability to carry out a career as an archive and records officer. For the last two years she has worked as a volunteer collections assistant with East Lothian Museums where she has built up knowledge of using CRM systems, collections systems such as mode complete, pest management systems, organising archives and collections, recording data to add to databases and has the expert knowledge needed to handle archives and objects safetly and appropriatley.
In 2019 Sophie completed a four month placement at the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Museum as a collections assistant. She reorganised the whole museum store, relabelled and reboxed archives and collections. She took on the project of archiving their records collection. They had an unorganised archive collection so took on the responsibility to reorganise and re order it. This took a while as it was completley disorganised but a great opportunity for her to practice my archive and records management experience.
