From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Example 1[edit]

The source[edit]

It is an article at kotaku.com by Brian Ashcraft: "How Cover Shaped Gaming’s Last Decade" [1]; the relevant portion says:

It could be argued that the idea of cover is as old as video games are themselves. Space Invaders from 1977 featured cover — while not a "mechanic" per se, the player's laser cannon can find cover behind destructible defense bunkers

The edit[edit]

  • The relevant portion of this edit [2] adds the following material to Space Invaders, with the reference given above:

It also introduced the concepts of taking cover from enemy fire and destructible barriers.

What is the difference between the source and the edits?[edit]

The source says that Space Invaders used taking cover and destructible barriers. The edit makes the stronger claim that this was for the first time.

[Also, see the edits [3] and [4].)

Example 2[edit]

The source[edit]

It is a review of the video game kill.switch [5].

The edit[edit]

  • The relevant portion of this edit [6] adds the following material to Third-person shooter, with the reference given above:

Kill.Switch (2002) introduced a cover system that required a button to initiate the action of taking cover and allowed the in-game avatar to lean out and shoot, vault over cover, or blind fire during the cover sequence.

What is the difference between the source and the edits?[edit]

  1. The edit says that the game uses a button to take cover. This is true, but the review does not say so.
  2. The edit says that when covered, the player can lean out and shoot, vault, or blind fire. The review only mentions the first and third options (and not vaulting.) [Another review [7] says "peek around or above your cover", so leaning out may include vaulting.]
