Generics undergo scrutinous requirements to meet the equal efficacy, safety, dosage, strength, stability, and quality of brand name drugs[1]. Generics are developed after the brand name has already been established, and so generic drug approval in many aspects has a shortened approval process because it replicates the brand name drug[2].

Brand name drugs cost more however, because, unlike generic drugs, brand name drugs have to repeat the research trials to show efficacy and safety is fully established[3]. Because drug companies have to invest more in research costs to do this, the price of brand name drugs increases when wanting to be sold to consumers[4]
