Francis Sprout was born in Tucson, Arizona. He was trained as both an artist and art historian. He received a B.F.A. from the University of Arizona, Tucson; an M.F.A from the University of California, San Diego, and an M.A. in African Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles. He taught at the University of Denver and was a tenured professor at Metropolitan State College in Denver. In New York he taught at Manhattanville College, Purchase College, State University of New York, in Purchase and at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He is currently teaching studio art an art history at Indian River State College and the Vero Beach Museum of Art, Vero Beach, Florida.
