The Coates/Frost Election Day Shootout

On October 16, 1867, the long running feud between the Frost and the Coates families came to a head. Even though the Civil War was over for two years, there was bad blood between the Frost family, who supported the South during the war, and the Coates, who supported the Union. A brawl turned into a shootout in front of Baechtel’s store on Voting Day, leaving Abraham Coates, Henry Coates, Albert Coates, Thomas Coates and Elisha Frost were killed in the battle.
