Kostek, officially the Federation of Kostek, is an island nation in the Southern Ocean. The country includes mainland Kostek as well as the Lefen Islands to the south and the Taknat Islands in the eastern bay. The capital of Kostek is Karyket in the southeast, and the largest city is Riveche in the northwest.

Kostek's climate is cold due to its subpolar location. Kostek is one of the southernmost countries in the world. At its closest, Antarctica is 1,000 km away.

Kostek is one of the few countries mostly untouched by European colonisation. This is largely due to its far southern location, as well as fierce winds and storms that surround it. The few ships that made it through the storms onto the shores of Kostek were greeted by calm waters. In the 1300s, British and French ships arrived in Kostek after fleeing from the Black Death. These people became the Trajak and Humans. Interestingly, the native Kosteke do not view themselves as humans. They view themselves as a different species based on their tribe.

Geography[edit]

Kostek's most notable geographic features are the Great Bog and the Terrukuo, both located in the northeast.

The Great Bog is, as the name suggests, a massive bog. It covers roughly a fourteenth of the surface of the country, and in the north a waterfall dumps into a fjord. This fjord is the Terrukuo, a massive gorge that cuts through the north of the country towards the ocean. Terrukuo literally means "Deep Chop" in Vjultitahko, in reference to its shape.

Kostek is also marked by the circular Virk mountains around the centre of the largest island.

The climate of Kostek is subpolar.

History[edit]

For the vast majority of its history, Kostek has been isolated. It consisted of many hunter-gatherers and some agricultural cities, like Karyket and Riveche. Sometime in the 1500s, a massive war broke out between the kingdoms. The Trajak-led alliance with the Defet, Vjulti, and Kyndic won, and the Trajak leader Vor Tekr became a national hero, as did the Vjulti, Kyndic, and Defet leaders Kaaro Forruo, Lok Xen, and Pav Tek'e.

In the 1960s, Kostek came into contact with modern society for the first time. American and Soviet ships both landed on its shores, and immediately began to fight one another, with many Kosteke caught in the crossfire. Kostek eventually became part of the Soviet bloc, but retained much of its traditional values such as its religion, languages, and culture. Kostek's own brand of socialism, also called Matazism after its creator, the Defet Vuk Mataz, was mainly based around retaining cultural values but also adding socialist and egalitarian elements to it.

After the Soviet Union fell, Kostek did not change much, as it was fully autarkic before it opened. Despite many businessmen wanting to pay top dollar for Kosteke goods, Kostek's borders are fully closed to most people; the isolationist mindset still remains in the people and culture.

Demographics[edit]

Kostek is a very diverse nation, with eight main ethnic groups, often referred to as tribes. These tribes view themselves as separate from the other tribes. There are four 'major' and four 'minor' tribes. The major tribes; the Defet, Vjulti, Kyndic, and Trajak, were the victors of the Kostek War, and the minor tribes; the Humans, Nogor, Ekin, and Bokiro, were the losers.
