2001/2621ICT - Project Management Assignment 2 - 2008[edit]

Developing a Project Plan

Due date: 26th October 2008

The Problem[edit]

The DropBy Café is a convenience store and coffee shop located at the centre of an urban business village. The café has been in operation for more than twenty years, and in the hands of it’s current owner, Nathan Barlow, for three years. Mr Barlow has decided to bring his business online in order to streamline his business practices and attract more customers to the store.

While the DropBy Café is the only convenience store in the urban village, there are a number of other food outlets for residents and workers in the area to choose from and the café is located on one side of the village, rather than in a central location. The café has experienced limited success in advertising the business. Advertising in the local paper is expensive and has not resulted in a marked increase in customers. Leaflet drops have likewise been ineffective. One of the fast food outlets in the village has utilised an online ordering system with success, and as the workers in the area have limited time for meals Mr Barlow feels that perhaps a similar option from the café will attract more business to the shop.

Mr Barlow would like to implement a website advertising the café so that his customers have easy access to his product’s information and so that he can advertise weekly specials online. He would like to implement a system which allows customers to order café items such as coffee and a limited range of food items online. While the focus of the current project is on the website and online ordering system, Mr Barlow is also aware that his business processes are currently manual and he would like to use computers to manage his staff, store and inventory in the longer term. The staffing arrangement at the DropBy Café is as follows: A decision has been taken to develop a new website and online ordering system for the DropBy Cafe, and Integral Solutions has been engaged to develop the system. The Statement of User Requirements developed by the User Experience Engineer within Integral Solutions in conjunction with Nathan Barlow is provided. Integral Solutions is to liaise primarily with Nathan Barlow.

Your task is to develop a project plan for Integral Solutions to perform the project. Integral Solutions has a total staff of 25 programmers. There are five personnel available for this project: a Project Manager, Quality Engineer, Systems Analyst / Designer, and two Programmers. The project is to commence on 3rd November 2008, and there are no constraints on staff availability. All staff are familiar with the development environment to be employed in the project.

You will need to develop a Work Breakdown Structure and estimates of product size and effort for the Project, along with an analysis of the key identifiable risks, problems and constraints. Estimates should be developed using a Function Point method. The WBS should be based upon a tailoring of ISO 12207 for the selected life cycle model. The plan should be documented as recommended in the course material, using the provided Template, and should include a complete schedule for the project. A detailed description of the contents of the Plan, and detailed assessment criteria, are provided.

Conduct of the Assignment[edit]

Team Formation[edit]

This assignment is to be performed in teams of between 3 and 6 members. Teams of less than 3 members are too small and material from such groups will not be marked. Students must self-select into teams, and should register the team membership using the Virgil system. If any students enrolled in the course have not registered for team membership by 4pm on 13th October 2008, without reasonable excuse, late penalties will be imposed at the level of 10% of the total marks available for each working day late. Failure to locate team members, or to join a team, will not be accepted as a reason for poor performance in the assignment.

Deliverables[edit]

The Assignment is due at midnight on Sunday 26th October 2008.  In addition to the Project Plan, which shall be submitted by the group as a whole, each student shall submit a diary showing their individual contribution to the assignment. The diary shall record:

  • Hours worked on individual tasks for the assignment, showing the nature of the tasks performed;
  • Hours worked on activities as a team, showing the nature of the work;
  • Notes on the use made and usefulness of techniques for work breakdown, network analysis, estimation, and risk analysis in the preparation of the Plan.

It is expected that records within members of a team will be consistent. Where it is apparent from the diaries submitted by a team that one or more members have not contributed adequately to the work of the team, marks will be adjusted accordingly. Penalties will be applied for failure to meet the due date without reasonable excuse.  10% of the available marks for the deliverable will be deducted for each working day that the deliverable is late.

Standards[edit]

Standards for presentation have been defined, and all deliverables should adhere to these. With respect to cheating and plagiarism, refer to the University's Academic Misconduct Policy. The assignment is worth 40% of the total assessment for the subject. 35% will be awarded on the basis of the Project Plan, and 5% on the basis of the individual diary.
